Winter’s Gift or Grief?
“How to have a happy spirit in an arctic freeze with a snowstorm.”
Too long for a blog title, but welcome to our winter world in NE Ohio.

Driving our 10-year-old ballerina, Emerson, to class, she emphatically declared her total dislike of winter. Her wish: one snow and the other three seasons should take over. In fairness, Emmi loves nature. Green trees and flowers.
There are many who share her view, maybe you too. But not me. Let me count some ways:
1. My favorite time of year for tweaking my house is after Christmas, before the busy outdoor season lands. This month – new living room curtains. Painted the mantel. Color change in the main bathroom. Inexpensive tweaks in the spirit of making our simple home a warm and inviting haven. It is my happy place.

2. Cozy. Wrapped up fireside in a comfy throw. A book, my planner, lists, and more lists. Ideas emerge. Creativity is sparked.
3. I set my vision! That first opening of our windows to warm breezes. There are not enough adjectives. I would never have the same appreciation had I not wintered! And I love the countdown.
4. Proving to myself I can still do hard things. I need to build resiliency in this season of life. And practice doing it with the least amount of complaining.
5. Life slows down, though we haven’t. Our son Bret’s family entered the world of fostering. Along with their own five, newborn twins arrived in December. Our hands are full, along with our hearts. A winter pause looks different this year.
6. Kitchen view. Always seems more fun in the winter to cook, bake, and share. And hunt for new recipes. My newest cookbook.

“Once upon a time, a king came to earth to tell stories, and the stories contained the mystery of eternal life.” Jared Wilson, author and pastor
Winter always finds me digging deeper into the King’s stories, found in the Bible. Finding peace and conviction in simple rhythms. Meeting God first thing in the morning.
Note to self. Seasons pass quickly. Make the most of the one you’re in. This photo is for Em and all my winter-dismayed friends. Hang in there. Green is coming.

The timer dings in my Saturday morning. I’m off to declutter and reorganize my pantry (again). Worst catch-all spot in my house.
Momentum. Stacking a win. I came. I saw. Question: How much will I donate?
Thank you for sitting with me in 9 degrees.
Margi
